Indigenous student recruitment is approached holistically by sharing personal experiences and stories and showing the variety of pathways available to attaining higher education regardless of their educational background. For many educational stakeholders, and in particular, northern Ontario and Quebec communities, APSIP is the only exposure to post-secondary education opportunities their students may receive. APSIP will function on the understanding and principle that Indigenous people can best define the needs of Indigenous learners and their communities, as well as increase the educational enrollment and attainment of their members. I am the Indigenous Community Engagement Coordinator at Ontario Tech University. I work with community partners, school boards and First Nation, Metis and Inuit communities to help raise awareness of educational pathways and career options for Indigenous learners of all ages. As a member of the Indigenous Education and Cultural Services team at Ontario Tech, I also facilitate Indigenous-focused programming for Indigenous youth and educators that support Indigenous learners. Check out Ontario Tech’s Indigenous Admissions Consideration Policy for First Nation, Inuit and/or Metis students who do not meet the competitive GPA for admission, but still meet a minimum 70 per cent high school grade point average.
